March General Meeting
March 8, 2016
At the February General meeting, Joan Pylman created a poignant memorial for Nancy Reagan with pictures and other memorabilia of this most elegant former First Lady.
The guest speaker at this meeting was Carolyn Cavecche, the President and CEO of the Orange County Taxpayers Association (OCTax). OCTax is a non-partisan, non-profit with many businesses, agencies and individuals as its members. Her organization's mission is "... to ensure that taxes and tax-supported programs are fair, understandable, cost-effective, and good for the economy...."
Here are some of her comments:
- Don't change Prop 13.
- The California Budget for 2016-2017 is at 122 billion dollars. Due to Proposition 2, $8B is in a Rainy Day Fund.
- 144 thousand taxpayers account for 50% of the budget.
- There's a lot of state debt. $224B in long-term costs, debts, and liabilities.
$77B in deferred maintenance owed.
$85B general obligation and lease revenue bonds.
- California has the highest sales tax,
4th highest gasoline tax,
highest personal income tax,
highest corporate income tax in the West,
worst run state (24/7 Wall St),
worst state to retire in (Kiplinger study), and
worst state to do business (Chiefexecutive.net).
Imagine what will happen as the 144,000 taxpayers leave California?
- There are several bills to increase taxes.
SB 8, ACA 4, SCA 5, SB 789,ABX2-18, ABX2-10, and ABX2-9.
- NEVER sign a petition in front of a grocery store. They don't show the whole contents of the petition.
- CalSTRS, the teachers pension, will be broke in two decades.
Carolyn pointed out that the OCTax website has 13 criteria for a good school bond. It can be found at the middle of their webpage at http://www.octax.org/#!local-fees-taxes/cnqi.
February General Meeting
February 9, 2016
At the February General meeting, the guest speaker was Dr. Barbara Stone, retired Political Science Professor Emeritus at Cal State Fullerton.
Her opening statement was "I think there's a reasonable chance that the (Republican) California primary will matter." No one will have enough delegate votes to win the nomination before California's primary. How about that?
Each candidate has his/her good qualities and shortcomings. Dr. Stone said to listen to the candidates and decide for yourself whom you would rather support. That is, she didn't recommend any particular candidate.
January General Meeting
January 12, 2016
At the January General meeting, the guest speaker was Daryl Evans, Manager of the Cerritos Community Safety Services.
Daryl talked about various ways to be safer from crime.
A good website that shows weekly crimes geographically is CrimeMapping.com. Different crime types are shown with icons at the crime site.
